Union to Hold Community Forum on Quality and Accountability of Care At UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center

The Union of Health Professionals of New Mexico is holding a first-of-its-kind community forum on Sept. 17 to discuss with the public the serious and ongoing safety and staffing issues affecting patient healing conditions at University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center. Panelists will include Lt. Gov. Howie Morales, a state representative, a county commissioner, a patient, two nurses, AFT and District 1199NM officials.

UNM SRMC and Union Set to Start Bargaining Next Week

Following last week’s district court ruling ordering the University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center to get to the bargaining table, the United Health Professionals of New Mexico announced today that the hospital agreed to begin negotiations with the union next Wednesday.

Sandoval RMC Union Says It Accepts 3 Percent Wage Increase and Demands Bargaining Now

The United Health Professionals of New Mexico, the union that represents nurses and other health professionals at the University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center, offered a memorandum of agreement to the hospital today that would give the UHPNM workers the same 3 percent wage increase as the hospital system provided its other employees earlier this month.

University of New Mexico Hospital Staff To Receive Raises Except Unionized UNM Sandoval RMC Staff

The University of New Mexico said it would provide wage increases to all of its hospital staff except those who are members of the unionized UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center.

“This is a crass and petty ploy to get us to forsake our union, but we won’t be bought off. Having a union means fighting for a contract that includes not only wages that workers deserve, but also provisions to improve the quality of patient care and working conditions,” said Adrienne Enghouse, organizer for the United Health Professionals of New Mexico.

Sandoval Regional Medical Center Dealt New Blow by New Mexico Labor Board

July 18, 2024

The University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center’s hostility to its own workers backfired again today when the executive director of the state Public Employee Labor Relations Board found the facility violated New Mexico law by illegally attempting to stop union representatives from accessing the workplace to meet with members.

“This crucial decision helps establish safer patient care by allowing us the representation we need to speak up on behalf of our patients,” said United Health Professionals of New Mexico member and MRI technician Gilbert Martinez. “Having knowledgeable union reps by our side is essential to our ability to speak up for safer patient care and helping mitigate retaliation, targeting and bullying.”

United Health Professionals of New Mexico Wins Court Round to Bargain

May 16, 2024

The United Health Professionals of New Mexico won an important court round when New Mexico Judicial District Court Judge Joshua Allison issued an order denying a request by the University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center to stay the union’s request to bargain.

UHPNM won the right to form a union more than two years ago, but UNM Sandoval has refused to come to the bargaining table. UHPNM filed a suit asking the court to compel the hospital to bargain.

UNM SRMC Still Does Not Care: We Formed Our Union to Protect Our Patients. Today UNM SRMC Showed They Don’t Care About Patients or Staff.

We proposed patient safety language, a process to document unsafe staffing, mandatory meal and rest breaks, and wage equity with the UNMH Campus to improve retention for better patient care.

They proposed a dangerous contract that compromises patient safety and treats staff like they are disposable.

“Negotiating” doesn’t mean we throw our patients under the bus.

“Negotiating” doesn’t mean rubber-stamping bad proposals.

“Negotiating” doesn’t mean we sign off on insulting 3% wage proposals that are less than other employees.

We are ready to negotiate when they are ready to care.
